Amelia's First Triathlon

We spent most of the week at my mom's cottage this week and on Saturday, Amelia competed in her first triathlon. It was the SunRype Kid's Triathlon Series a non-competitive event who's goal is "completion" not "competition". So while the event is chip timed, the results are listed in alphabetical order. Amelia completed the event in 23:54. The event was divided by age group and then within each age group there were heats. Amelia was in the 8-9 age group and in heat #19 (first heat in her age group, 19th of the day).

She was a little scared prior to the start and was crying before she went in. She had to go into the pool area quite a while before the race and she was scared. However she recovered and did an awesome swim. She finished fourth (out of 12) in her heat. The swim was 75m (3 laps). I waited outside for her to run out but she wasn't coming. Turns out she forgot her flip flops and went back to get them. Ended up running to her bike with them in her hand but she lost quite a bit of time (no running on pool deck). Transition was a bit slow as she was trying to get socks on wet feet. Finally gave up and went barefoot in the running shoes. Walked her bike out of the transition area and started her ride. The bike course was 2 loops for 3K total. She rode back into the transition area and she gave the volunteer her bike/helmet and off she went for the run. By this time she was pretty tired and did a bit of walking. However she finished strong and ran across the finish line.

All in all a good experience and she wants to do another one! Next time we'll skip the flip flops.

As for me, did all my runs at the cottage this week so lots and lots of hills. Amelia joined me on a lot of the runs, riding her bike behind me. I cut my long run short (8 miles), to get ready to take her to her triathlon.

Tomorrow we are heading out camping for 5 nights so not sure how much running will get done, but it sure will be fun! Next Sunday is the half marathon in Barrie!
